Woman posing as fake AIIMS doctor steals gold, foreign currency from women's hostel

In a startling case of theft from one of India's most secure medical campuses, a 43-year-old woman has been arrested for posing as a doctor and robbing the AIIMS women doctors’ hostel in Delhi. The woman, previously a lab assistant, confessed to the crime and admitted she had a long-standing obsession with jewellery.

According to Delhi Police, the theft came to light on March 27 when a woman doctor filed a complaint reporting missing valuables from her hostel room. Stolen items included two gold chains, a gold ring, earrings, a bracelet, ₹4,500 in cash, and 522 Malaysian Ringgits.

Initial investigations led police to sift through footage from over 100 CCTV cameras. One clip stood out — a woman dressed in a doctor’s coat was seen suspiciously roaming hostel corridors and attempting to open multiple doors, likely after most residents had left for their hospital duties.

The woman eventually exited the premises on a scooter. Investigators traced the registration number and tracked her down to Ghaziabad’s Brij Vihar area, where she was arrested. During interrogation, she admitted to the theft and revealed that she had previously worked at a private hospital, making frequent visits to AIIMS.

“She had noticed that many hostel room doors were left unlocked during work hours, making it an easy target,” said a senior police officer. The woman said she had always loved gold jewellery but never had the means to afford it, and that eventually pushed her to commit thefts.

Police also confirmed that she had been involved in similar crimes earlier and is now under further investigation for a possible theft pattern in other medical institutions.
